Cognitive takes the city beyond Smart.
Imagine you’re stuck in traffic. Your mobile informs you that the trip is 20 minutes delayed because of a traffic accident 100 meters ahead. All you can do is call to postpone your meeting.
It is real-time information. It is Smart, but all you can do with it is react!
A cognitive approach is all about predictability powered by AI and supported by 5G connections preventing the inconvenience caused by any accident… Something critical in the future resilience of cities.
The Cognitive city approach is not reactive but predictive.
Taking the above example, the person will not get stuck in traffic.
When a cognitive city detects an accident (it could even be before it happens when the technology is that advanced in the concept!), everything acts accordingly: traffic signs (and soon the routes in autonomous cars) are programmed to move all transport outside the area emptying the access to ambulances and police. The cognitive engine checks the side effect on our user’s daily planning: both meeting attendees will not make it in time! Still having breakfast at home, the cognitive system reaches the user informing him the best alternative, according to all attendee’s profiles, is to meet online and move later to the office. The cognitive system learns how to make more accurate future recommendations based on the user’s decision.
A Cognitive city is when the whole city aligns with each citizen's individual need!
Co-creating a Cognitive City
The Cognitive City infrastructure
There is a simple reason why only now is happening this Smart City paradigm shifted towards Cognitive: infrastructure and technology advancements!
Produced in June 2020 by the UK’s Digital Catapult, the report concluded that the city was at a tipping point where 5G is going to take off and, in turn, enable artificial intelligence, a broader internet of things, larger networks, and that these technologies lay the foundation for a whole range of applications and services, or by other words: lay the foundation for a cognitive city.
The Cognitive city uses 5G hyperspeed connectivity, edge computing and AI to shift the urban living paradigm.
Something that only now can we start planning. But the plan’s first stage has to be building this new advanced infrastructure!
Similar to Energy Transition, InnovateCity, can partner with cities to Build, Own, Operate and Transfer this Digital Transformation towards a Cognitive City.
